The Market is in a recovery with all of the reductions, however I can see how stricter laws on environmental regulations can hurt a few big manufacturers here in the states. The government definitely has a lot of power over this industry. Which can be very bad.

Security is no doubt the top concern, at least according to my survey of over 900 respondents. Service level agreements can make things right if something goes wrong, but the real worry is securing the data so that there is less chance of a breach. Today it is unlikely there will be zero chance of that. So you have to actively manage that risk.

One of my biggest concerns is that those who choose to stay out of the cloud might think that simply by doing so they are safe. But unless there is absolutely no way of accessing your servers and software from outside you building, there is still risk. That would mean no VPN, no way your trusted employees can access anything outside of the office. Even laptops that leave the building and are subsequently re-connected can cause security breaches.

My point? Security is an issue whether you are operating applications in the cloud or on-premise and too many overlook the dangers. Operating in a SaaS environment may actually be safer.

Hey thanks for the information. I would have to agree as well. While things are not going great everywhere, there are some very positive things going on abroad. Hopefully these trends move to the US. Dave

Comment on Can ERP Integration & IEM Technology Keep Manufacturing In The US? by Chuck Stahl

You make some very valid points regarding IEM manufacturing in the US. Collins does, I believe, and as you imply, somewhat miss the mark on his argument that complex machines should not be manufactured overseas. With sound, proven processes in place, and highly functional, tightly integrated systems supporting those processes, I believe that manufacturers can choose to successfully offshore some complex products design and manufacturing processes. Those manufacturers who do consider engineering and producing their products overseas should, however, weigh the complexities and risks inherent in this process as an additional mitigating factor in their decision making process. Along with higher transportation costs and lean trends toward production closer to the end customer, consideration of these factors could be enough to tip the pendulum in the direction of staying at home. But not in all cases –the fact is Offshoring is and will continue to be a reality, at least for the foreseeable future. So it’s left to manufacturers and their trusted technology partners to determine the best systems and processes to make offshoring as seamless as possible when it becomes a necessity.
If you’re a manufacturer looking at what systems can best help you to manage these complex processes, talk to Luciano or myself. We’d be glad to show you the power of the technology available today.
